Microway® Delivers Navion-F-Series Powered By Next-Generation AMD Opteron Processors
SMP Servers and Clusters Built for Demanding 64-bit HPC and Enterprise Applications
Kingston, MA - August 15, 2006 -
Microway today announced its new Navion F- Series dual and quad-processor SMP servers powered by Next-Generation AMD Opteron
processors, with up to five removable drives and up to 64 GB memory. The Navion-F-4, ideal for compute-intensive applications including DSP,
CFD and FEA, as well as high-performance database and enterprise-class applications, employs Microway's 4U RuggedRack and four
Next-Generation AMD Opteron 8000 Series processors. Microway's Navion-F-2, best used in high-performance computing (HPC) and data center
installations which need to run a balanced load of diverse applications in 44U rack cabinets, features two Next-Generation AMD Opteron 2000
Series processors in a robustly cooled 1U chassis.
Housed in a 4U rack mount chassis, the Navion-F-4 is designed for power and excellent cooling, which provides a high return on investment, while
at the same time helping to lower total cost of ownership (TCO). Its integrated advanced manageability features have been refined over years of
development and hundreds of real-world cluster deployments. Microway's NodeWatch and MCMS management solutions for remote cluster
monitoring and control are included as standard features on the Navion-F-4 and are optional on the Navion-F-2. Microway's achieved operating
temperatures are consistently lower than industry guidelines. The RuggedRack includes front access hard disks and Hot-Swap power supplies. This
allows the most common system failures to be serviced without powering off the server, or even removing the unit from a cabinet.
Employing dual-core processors, a Navion-F-4 workstation that runs 4 processors and 8 cores, has 64 GB of memory and expanded I/O and hard disk
c
apability can be purchased for less than $20,000. The Next-Generation AMD Opteron processor defines a new standard in performance-per-watt
with energy-efficient DDR2 memory and improved AMD PowerNow! capabilities.
"AMD's enhancements to its industry-proven AMD Opteron processors further ensure the value that our customers count on for budget-sensitive
high performance computing needs, all without compromising superior performance," said Stephen Fried, President and CTO, Microway, Inc.
"Having a second core on the die enables programs that are not memory-bound to take full advantage of additional processing power and
applications like floating point intensive computations, SMP applications that make frequent calls, transaction-based business applications, and
programs that depend on byte code interpreters to carry the work load can dramatically improve in speed. Microway strongly believes the
Next-Generation AMD Opteron processor will change the face of high performance computing."
"Both Microway and AMD are focused on providing innovative solutions that address the performance and energy-efficiency demands of high
performance computing environments" said Pat Patla, Director, Server/Workstation Marketing, AMD (NYSE: AMD). "With Direct Connect
Architecture to help increase performance, with multi-core capabilities, and with fast memory access, Next-Generation AMD Opteron processors
define a new standard in performance-per-watt, while offering excellent returns on investment for the enterprise customer."
