Microway® Releases New, Green Navion™-HE HPC Clusters with AMD Opteron™ HE Processors

New, green Navion™-HE HPC Clusters from Microway
featuring Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ HE processors for high efficiency and low power. Achieve superior levels of performance, density and energy efficiency.

Kingston, MA – January 25, 2009 –

Microway announces the Navion™ HE compute servers and clusters based on the industry-leading performance-per-watt AMD Opteron™ processors. The Navion-HE server includes up to 8 Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ HE processors and up to 256 GB shared access memory. AMD’s Dual Dynamic Power Management™ and AMD CoolCore™ technology help each processor and core to maximize the power-saving benefits of Enhanced AMD PowerNow!™ technology, without compromising performance.

The Navion-HE Cluster packaging achieves a density of 80 compute nodes (640 CPU cores) in a standard 42U cabinet. The Navion HE-2X 1U twin compute server includes two complete nodes (motherboards), each with two CPUs, local storage, InfiniBand and Gigabit Ethernet. Each motherboard houses up to 64 GB DRAM. Customers with compute-intensive applications including DSP, CFD, Monte Carlo Simulations and FEA, as well as high-performance database and enterprise-class applications choose Navion for exceptional performance and power/space efficiency.

Navion HE high density clusters are delivered in either of two rack cabinets. Microway’s CoolRak™ high air flow 19″ rack supports this new level of density in a conditioned data center environment. Alternatively, CoolTherm® racks, with integrated cooling, monitoring and safety, allow installation in any office environment as they create ZERO heat load in the room.

Microway’s clusters feature integrated advanced manageability features that have been refined over years of development and thousands of real-world cluster deployments. Microway Cluster Management System (MCMS™ ) hardware/software including NodeWatch™ for remote cluster monitoring and control is available on Navion servers. Well-known for its expertise in cooling, Microway’s achieved operating temperatures are consistently lower than industry guidelines. Both the 1U CoolFlow™ chassis and 4U RuggedRack™ feature proprietary Across-the-Board™ enhanced cooling. The RuggedRack includes front access hard disks and Hot-Swap power supplies. This allows the most common system failures to be serviced without powering off the server, or even removing the unit from a cabinet.

“AMD is extremely pleased to continue our work with Microway, delivering superior energy-efficient solutions to the HPC market,” said John Fruehe, director, Business Development, Server/Workstation Products, AMD (NYSE: AMD). “The Quad-Core AMD Opteron HE processors are the perfect compliment for the Navion compute server and cluster line, helping customers reduce energy costs, while continuing to take advantage of high efficiency and performance in critical workloads.”

Technical innovations of the Quad-Core AMD Opteron HE processors resulting in low TCO are of special importance to cluster and data center designers. AMD’s latest Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors are built on 45nm process technology, and are packed with core and cache enhancements designed to improve performance of server and workstation applications. They contain power efficient features such as AMD CoolCore™ technology, designed to turn off portions of the processor logic and memory controller when not in use, helping to reduce processor energy consumption and heat generation. AMD’s Dual Dynamic Power Management™ offers separate power planes for the cores and integrated memory controller for optimal performance and low power consumption, and Independent Dynamic Core Technology is designed to allow each core’s utilization to be separately controlled for better power management, to help reduce power consumption. Further, Enhanced AMD PowerNow!™ technology can help lower the total operational cost of data centers by reducing processor power consumption during non-peak workloads, thereby helping to reduce heat generation and decrease strain on facility cooling systems in order to protect investments in today’s demanding data processing environments.

Microway is an AMD Platinum Solution Provider, offering the newest AMD processors, AMD FireStream™ GPUs and high end graphics cards in its innovative product lines, including HPC clusters, servers, WhisperStations and storage servers. Microway’s HPC Clusters and workstations can be configured with 1 to 4 FireStream GPUs per server.
